REACH
Minimal use of harmful chemicals
Like many everyday items, rugs can contain harmful chemicals that influence the indoor chemistry of a room. Rugs and underlay can act as a source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are released into the indoor environment and have a negative impact on your health and the surroundings. It can be challenging for consumers to navigate the jungle of chemical content and toxicity, which is why REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) was established in 2006.
REACH is a regulation developed by the European Union, introduced to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the potential risk of chemicals. It also promotes alternative ways for evaluating harmful substances to reduce the number of tests on animals.
For example, REACH restrict the use of certain dyes and flame retardants in textiles and rugs. They also have set new limits for a number of CMR substances (substances that are mutagenic, carcinogenic or toxic for reproduction), including formaldehyde, heavy metals and benzenes.
REACH compliant
As a responsible company and leading producer and distributor of handmade rugs, Linie Design ensures that all products comply with required European legislation. In line with our mission to minimise our impact on the environment, we welcome the REACH regulations that were introduced with the aim of reducing and restricting substances that can be deemed harmful to humans and the environment.
All Linie Design’s products comply with REACH regulations, which means we have to identify and manage the risks associated with any substances we manufacture and market in Europe.
REACH regulations do not just apply to chemicals in industrial processes, but also in many everyday items, from paint and cleaning products to clothing, furniture and electrical items. Therefore, REACH regulations have a far-reaching impact on most companies across the EU, as they have to identify and manage the risks linked to the substances they manufacture and market in the EU. They have to demonstrate that the substance can be safely used and communicate the risk management measures to the users.
Beyond REACH requirements
In addition to fulfilling the mandatory REACH requirements, Linie Design has taken extra initiatives that both help our suppliers comply with the criteria, as well as offering further protection to the consumer against chemical content. To optimally monitor the chemicals used in our products, we have employed an external industry chemist to develop our own Product Environment Guideline, which is reviewed and updated every year.
